What is microneedling and how does it work?

Microneedling skin treatmentsWhat is microneedling?

Microneedling is a cosmetic treatment for the improvement of skin conditions. It is most commonly used to reduce wrinkles, acne scarring, rosacea, hyper-pigmentation and stretch marks.

How does microneedling work?

Microneedling creates tiny punctures in the skin, which increase blood flow to the area and stimulate the production of neocollagen (new collagen). Collagen is the protein that gives skin its strength and elasticity. As we age, collagen production declines significantly, leading to wrinkles and a loss of firmness — the classic visible signs of ageing.

Microneedling also treats acne and acne scarring. By stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin, it helps reduce the appearance of scars and improve overall skin texture.

Treatment Options

Dermaroller

  • A topical anaesthetic is recommended for this treatment.

  • Suitable for treating deep scarring, particularly on the face.

  • More appropriate for larger treatment areas such as the upper and lower body and limbs.

  • A cylindrical, drum-shaped device covered with symmetrical microneedles.

  • Rolled across the skin to create controlled, superficial micro-injuries.

  • Stimulates collagen production in the dermal layer to support skin regeneration and repair.

Dermafix (Automated Pen Device)

  • An automated microneedling pen device.

  • A topical anaesthetic is not usually required.

  • Creates precise, controlled micro-channels in the skin.

  • Stimulates collagen production in the dermal layer.

  • Enhances product absorption by up to 80%, allowing active ingredients to penetrate more effectively.

Benefits of microneedling?

  • The skin acts as a natural protective barrier.

  • Approximately 99.7% of skincare products cannot penetrate the outermost layer of the skin (stratum corneum).

  • This means only around 0.3% of active ingredients are effectively absorbed.

  • Microneedling creates controlled micro-channels in the skin to increase permeability.

  • These tiny pathways allow active ingredients to penetrate more deeply and effectively.

  • Microneedling can enhance product absorption by up to 80%.

  • Stimulates natural collagen and elastin production.

  • Supports skin regeneration, repair, and overall skin health.
