What every woman with darker skin should know before laser hair removal

Safe laser hair removal for skin of colour

When clients with darker skin visit our clinic feeling nervous after a bad laser experience, I completely understand why.  Generally speaking, practitioners don’t have the necessary level of experience and knowledge to treat clients with skin of colour. Skin of colour refers to individuals with naturally darker skin tones, including African, Asian, Latinx, Native American, and Pacific Islander descent, typically corresponding to Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI.

This group require a specialist level of expertise and knowledge to fully benefit and enjoy optimum results following treatment. These clients are often understandably anxious as they tend to be more aware of the risk of complications such as Hyper/Hypo-pigmentation.

After treating thousands of clients with darker skin tones as a laser nurse specialist, I’ve learned that successful results usually come down to one thing:

Does your clinic, and more importantly, the practitioner delivering the treatment, genuinely understand how to treat your skin safely?

The good news is that laser hair removal can be extremely safe and effective for skin of colour clients when the right technology combined with experience are used.

We recently discussed this on our Instagram page

Why skin of colour clients need the correct laser.

It is vital that clients who are skin of colour are treated with a Class 4 Medical Grade Laser. These lasers have the technology that can successfully treat clients with darker skins. The laser has the ability to protect the darker skin and will only target the actual hair follicle.

Today, the safest laser option for skin of colour  is the:

Lumenis Lightsheer Class 4 Diode Laser

Why it works well for Skin of Colour:

✓ Safer for darker skin tones
✓ Lower hyperpigmentation risk
✓ Excellent for coarse dark hair
✓ Effective on Fitzpatrick IV–VI skin types

Why IPL is usually a red flag

  • IPL is NOT the same as laser.
  • IPL is generally NOT recommended for darker skin tones.
  • Unlike medical lasers, IPL uses broad scattered light, which makes it less precise and effective on darker skin tones, increasing the risk of burns and pigmentation changes.
  • If a clinic recommends IPL for darker skin without discussing risks or alternatives, that should be a concern.

The biggest advantage skin of colour women have

This surprises most people: Dark, coarse hair actually responds best to laser. Why?

  • More pigment = easier targeting
  • Thicker follicles = stronger results
  • Dense growth = more noticeable reduction

In many cases, darker skin clients see better results than fair-haired clients.

Red flags to watch for when choosing your laser clinic

1. “We treat all skin types the same” – Darker skin requires different settings and experience.

2. “You won’t need a patch test” – A good clinic should always carry out a patch test prior to starting any treatment.

3. They don’t know the type of laser they use – They should be able to tell you whether its an IPL or a Class 4 Laser

4. “Everyone only needs 6 sessions” – Most clients with darker skin require around 8–10 sessions depending on hair density and hormones. That’s why a  consultation is important so we can discuss your bespoke treatment plan.

5. They rarely treat darker skin – Experience matters just as much as the machine itself.

What to expect from the treatment

Before Treatment

  • Stop waxing/threading
  • Avoid sun exposure
  • Wear SPF 50 daily
  • Pause retinol and other active products 3/4 days before treatment.

After Treatment

You may experience (this is normal and usually settles within 24–48 hours):

  • Mild redness
  • Warmth
  • Temporary sensitivity

Will laser cause hyper/hypo pigmentation?

This is the biggest concern I hear from clients.

The truth:

  • Hyper/hypo pigmentation can happen
  • But it’s usually temporary
  • And largely preventable

The biggest causes are:

  • Incorrect laser choice
  • Aggressive settings
  • Sun exposure before and after treatment

That’s why aftercare matters so much.

The most important aftercare rule

SPF 50+

If you do one thing properly after laser, make it sun protection.

✓ Wear SPF daily
✓ Reapply regularly
✓ Avoid heat and direct sun for 48 hours
✓ Pause active skincare temporarily

Laser hair removal for darker skin can be very successful with the right technology and an experienced practitioner. Darker skin can be treated safely and effectively with excellent long-term results.

The key is choosing:
✓ The right laser
✓ The right clinic
✓ The right aftercare
