How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?
PicoSure Laser tattoo removal Vs Traditional Q-Switch Lasers
To understand how the process of tattoo removal works, think of ink particles as “rocks”. The latest technology in the PicoSure allows these “rocks” to be broken down to “sand” size, whilst traditional Q-Switched lasers, which predominately rely on a photothermal action, are only able to break the ink down to large “pebble’ size particles. The smaller the particle, the fewer number of sessions and faster the removal process is due to the body’s lymphatic system being able to more effectively flush these particles out of the body.
A minimum of 10 treatments and upwards of 15 or 20 is generally required using a traditional Q-switch laser vs the average of 6-10 using the PicoSure.
Picosecond vs. Nanosecond Technology
As discussed, traditional nanosecond lasers predominately rely on photothermal action, delivering heat to the pigment and surrounding tissue. PicoSure takes advantage of PressureWave technology to shatter the target ink into tiny particles that are easily eliminated by the body using ultrashort picosecond technology. Even dark, stubborn blue and green inks, as well as previously treated recalcitrant tattoos, can be removed.
Ultra-short Pulse Duration Is the Difference
- Picosecond pulse width is 100 x shorter than nanosecond technology.
- Only ultrashort pulse durations trigger a photomechanical effect.
- With this short pulse width, half the fluence (energy) is required compared to Q-Switched nanosecond lasers, meaning a safer quicker option for tattoo removal.

How long does a session last?
On average, a session will be between 30-45 minutes, so they can be easily scheduled around your day. A thorough medical and health check will be updated at the beginning of each session before the treatment starts. Treatments with Razor2Laser are scheduled between 8-12 weeks apart to fully allow the lymphatic system to flush the ink particles through the body. Anything sooner would be a waste of your own time and money!
